City-Light – this poetic name is given to backlit Notice boards that everyone knows. Since the 1980s, these advertising media, which originated in France, have become firmly established, at least in larger cities. With their relatives, the classic Notice boards, they belong to the fixed repertoire of “Ambient Media”. Popular locations for City Lights are bus or streetcar shelters, but also house facades, subway stations, airports, cinemas and other well-visited places. And why not your property?

Advertising with format

A standard format was specially developed for City Lights. Throughout Europe, the term City Lights is therefore also understood to mean a paper format of 118.5 x 175 cm. Here, poster motifs are printed on edge on special translucent substrates. Poster changers allow alternating presentation of different motifs.

What you should pay attention to

Anyone who wants to operate on a large scale with this form of advertising must do so with one of the large agencies that own the “lights of the city” and rent them out en masse according to sophisticated occupancy plans. The booking usually has to be made very long in advance, and once booked, there is no cancellation right with the City Lights. Six-figure sums quickly add up for occupancy at interesting locations in several cities.

However, advertisers can also use City-Lights on their own – and for their own account – in locations where no Notice boards are already in place or hanging and where the owner of the installation or mounting location agrees. This is usually not an issue when advertising in front of your own door or on your own premises. Design and printing of translucent posters suitable for this purpose are also carried out by smaller advertising agencies.

Not all Notice boards are equally suitable. The ideal City Light Glass Showcases should be made of high quality materials and have an easy to use access and lock off mechanism, weatherproof rubber seals, ventilation and safety glass. The lighting system installed is also important. LEDs produce a neutral light with sufficient intensity and diffusion effect. At the same time, they are economical in power consumption.
