Bike and business: a business that knows only winners

Daily cycling keeps you healthy and protects the environment. Therefore, more and more companies are promoting the transition of their employees from cars or buses and trains to the bicycle. A bicycle-compatible infrastructure supports such projects, as the example of the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) shows. Since 2006, the KfW has participated in the “bike + Business” project, which aims to increase bicycle mobility in Hesse. Since then, an exemplary infrastructure with secure and covered parking spaces, changing rooms, showers and short paths between parking lots and entrances has been created and continuously expanded. Today, well over 15 percent of the approximately 2,900 KfW employees in Frankfurt cycle to work.

Many (mostly large) companies have already recognized that bike-friendly infrastructures can get employees on their saddles. In addition to KfW, these include Thomas Cook, DHL, Google Germany and many more. The hurdles are getting lower and lower since manufacturers offer turnkey complete solutions. Together with their customers, they determine the number of parking spaces, plan the routes and required areas on a company´s premises. Sophisticated bicycle parking systems that enable two-level parking help save space and can easily be expanded as needed. The offer also includes roofs to protect against wind and rain, charging stations for e-bikes and pedelecs, showcases with important information and, of course, changerooms with lockable lockers and shower rooms.
The basis of such a Bike + Business solution is formed by modular room systems, which are delivered ready-to-use in no time and can easily change their location if necessary. Apart from the connections for water, sewage and electricity, the company does not have to concern itself about anything. Canopies for bicycle parking systems are even available with pre-tested type statistics. Leasing offers and tax concessions for employee bicycles, which are modelled on the “1% rule” from the so-called company car privilege, make the transition equally attractive for employers and employees alike.

People who cycle more frequently are less ill – it has been scientifically proven that employees who do their daily commute to and from work on the bicycle are far less absent due to illness and, moreover, are physically and mentally more fit. Good reasons for any company to seriously consider promoting the cycling mobility of its employees. On top of that, there is still the prospect of being publicly recognised by organisations such as the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad Club (ADFC) as a “bicycle friendly company”. A clear plus for environmentally conscious companies that want to keep or win fit and motivated employees. Bike and Business thus becomes a business that knows only winners: employers, employees and last but not least our environment.
