Climate adaptation starts at the local level
Sealed surfaces and areas that become extremely hot are posing increasing challenges for cities and municipalities. Greening, unsealing, and decentralized stormwater management can help make neighborhoods more resilient to heat and heavy rainfall.
Green roofs complement these measures: They retain stormwater, reduce the heating of roof surfaces, and create additional green spaces without taking up any additional land area.
Important: Green roofs should not be equated with soil restoration. However, both measures share common goals within the context of climate-adaptive urban development.
Nationwide Urban Development Funding
Urban development funding is jointly provided by the federal government and the states and is available to municipalities throughout Germany. For the year 2026, the federal government is allocating 1 billion euros for the first time to the three urban development programs.

Climate protection and climate adaptation play a central role in all three programs. The specific measures that are eligible for funding depend on the respective funding area, the urban development plan, and the funding guidelines of the respective federal state.
When Green Roofs Come into Play
Green roofs can be integrated into urban climate adaptation measures as part of green infrastructure.

Especially in areas where there is limited space available for additional green spaces at ground level, rooftop areas offer additional opportunities for climate-adapted design.
Green Roofs by WSM
Climate adaptation doesn't have to stop at the building envelope.
Selected WSM shelter systems can be combined with extensive green roofs. This creates sheltered gathering areas or bicycle parking facilities that also provide additional green space.
